AVMOV Free Member, but Police Investigation...'I'll be fine'?
"Could it be me?" Hundreds of thousands of subscribers to the illegal sex trafficking site AVMOV are staying awake at night after news broke that its core servers were seized by police. Even free members who have never paid or downloaded anything are worried that their email and cell phone numbers may have fallen into the hands of law enforcement. One user asked about possible punishment, saying, "All I did was write a few meaningless comments to get points," but the answers from the 12 lawyers who responded were mixed.
"I didn't pay, so it's okay, right?"...Can free members escape the investigative net?
The biggest question is whether members who simply signed up and did some activity, without paying or downloading anything, would be subject to investigation. Attorney Park Kyo-hyun, a former police investigator, pointed out the practical limitations.
"As the site has more than 500,000 members according to media reports, it would be very difficult for the police to realistically collect information on all members and proceed with an investigation, including raids," he said, adding that the likelihood of a case is not high if there is no payment. Attorney Kim Ji-jin (Law Firm Liberty) also cautioned against excessive anxiety, saying, "Raids are conducted when there are circumstances such as paid payments, possession of purchases, and distribution."
