'Dongyang Securities' Victims Sued for Class Damages (Law Firm Hanbyul)

By Chun Jeong-in Reporter = Damage claims are continuing to be filed by ordinary people who suffered losses related to the Dongyang Securities crisis.

On the 9th, according to law firm Hanbyul (Attorney Kang Rae-hyuk), 80 victims in Daejeon who were affected by the Dongyang crisis filed a lawsuit for damages worth 4 billion won against Dongyang Securities at the Seoul Central District Court, saying that "Dongyang Securities sold high-risk products by falsifying investor documents."

"It has been confirmed that Dongyang Securities falsified investor information documents as if the victims, who did not have much income, were earning high profits," they said, explaining, "This is because they can sell high-risk products by making it look like they are earning a lot of money." <"When the Dongtang scandal broke, the company sent out a document to its employees stating, 'Under no circumstances should you mention or confirm the contents of the document to acknowledge the incomplete sale,'" he said, emphasizing that Dongtang Securities tried to cover up its fraudulent sales behavior.

Previously, 24 farmers living in the Chungnam region also filed a lawsuit against Dongyang Securities on Feb. 2, claiming that they suffered damages after investing in corporate bonds and commercial paper (CP) of Dongyang Group affiliates.

In addition to these, other victims in each region are also preparing to file lawsuits, so it is expected that the damage claims related to the Dongyang Securities case will continue.

On the other hand, the Special Division 1 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Deputy Chief Prosecutor Yeo Hwan-seop), which is investigating the case, requested an arrest warrant for the current chairman and three key executives on July 7 on suspicion of issuing and selling fraudulent CPs and corporate bonds, causing damage to investors and improperly supporting insolvent affiliates (fraud and embezzlement under the Specified Economic Crimes Aggravated Punishment Act).

The substantive examination of the warrant is scheduled to be held on the 13th by Judge Jeon Hye-jae of the Seoul Central District Court.
