Saenuri's nomination screening starts...Jongno, Gangnam, Busan, etc. in focus

Article

[By Kim Hyo-jin and Lee Min-woo, Asia Economics Reporters] The Saenuri Party began its nomination screening process in earnest on the 16th. "This election is an election to choose between the past and the future," said Park Geun-hye, chairwoman of the Saenuri Party's emergency committee, during a plenary meeting at the party's Yeouido headquarters. "If we nominate people who will shape the world, we will be chosen by the people."

The nomination interviews for the candidates will begin on the 22nd. Single-candidate districts with no disqualifying factors, such as morality, will be announced early.

The regions that will be excluded from the "bottom 25 percent of active district councilors" and the regions where contests will be held will be finalized soon. Proportional representation nominations will open around the 5th of next month.

In Jongno, Seoul, former presidential press secretary Lee Dong-kwan and Rep. Cho Yoon-sun will compete for the final nomination. Former Prime Minister Chung Un-chan did not apply for the nomination. Instead, Nam Sang-hae, chairman of Harimgak, Gong Jae-duk of The Book Academy, and Jang Sang-state of the 21st Century Jongno Development Forum joined the race.

In the case of Gangnam, the BNP's biggest interest area in Seoul, Jeong Dong-dong, former chief of civil affairs at the Blue House, Meng Jeong-joo, former Gangnam-gu mayor, and Heo Joon-young, former police chief, have thrown down the gauntlet. Former Korea-U.S. FTA evangelist Kim Jong-hoon, the head of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, did not apply for the nomination, but is likely to be a strategic candidate.

For Kang Nam-gap, Representative Lee Jong-koo, Jo Jin-jin, an ambassador for the 2012 Yeosu World Expo, and Chae Jung-seok, a lawyer at Apex Law Firm, are competing.

In the first round, only one lawmaker, Lee Hye-hoon, filed for the nomination, while in the second roundthe race was contested by Representative Ko Seung-duk, former Seocho-gu mayor Park Sung-jung, former member of the National Advisory Council for Balanced Development to the President Bae Tae-ho, former deputy legislative director of the National Assembly Senator Sen Sen-jong, and Yoo Chul-hwan, CEO of Hanbyul Law Firmwill be competing for the position.

The proportional representatives, including Jung Ok-im, Noh Chul-rae, and Lim Dong-kyu, challenged the Saenuri Party's strongholds in Kangdong (Jung Ok-im) and Kang Dong-gap (Lim Dong-kyu and Noh Chul-rae). In Gangdong-gap, former SBS PD Hong Yong-tak and former Gangdong-gu mayor Shin Dong-woo filed for the nomination, while in Gangdong, Rep. Yoon Seok-yong, KECC CEO Koo Jae-beom, and Rep. Kim Chung-hwan joined the race.

In Busan's Sasang-gu, where Moon Jae-in, chairman of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation, announced his candidacy early and entered the race, Kim Dae-sik, former vice chairman of the National Rights and Interests Committee, Kim Soo-im, former chairman of the Kyungsil-yeon Chung Nong Seng Association, Park S-der, central vice chairwoman of the League of Women Voters of Korea, and Shin Sang-hae, former Busan city councilor, are challenging.

The Saenuri Party's worries will grow as its opponent is considered a potential presidential contender. The region may be categorized as a strategic candidate area.
